THINGS TO REMEMBER BEFORE AND AFTER IMPLANT PLACEMENT
- Candidate for implant should have a good oral hygiene.
- Shouldn’t have habit of cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption and/or tobacco consumption.
- The patient should have good immune system with no systemic disorder like diabetes or any heart diseases.
- Patient should take antibiotics as advised by the surgeon.
- After placement of implant, follow-up should be done in every 6 months to know the status of implant.
- It is advisable to avoid biting on extremely hard pieces of food.
- Brushing twice a day along with flossing should be done.
THINGS TO REMEMBER DURING IMPLANT PLACEMENT
- Local anesthesia is used during the procedure.
- After the dental implant, mild soreness can be treated with analgesics.
- Placing an implant may take an hour, or two. If you’re getting multiple implants, the time for your surgery may take longer. Once your dental implant has been placed, it will take about 4-6 months to heal.
- In some cases, bone graft can be needed if your bone isn’t thick enough to support implant. Bone graft is placed before an implant is placed and it may take around 4-5 months to heal.
- Sometimes sinus lift surgery might be required before implant placement in upper jaw
- After the abutment is placed, your gums must heal for about 2 weeks before the artificial tooth can be attached.
- Placing an implant can sometimes result in some complications like:
- Implant infection or peri – implantitis: Peri-implantitis is a destructive inflammatory process affecting the soft and hard tissues surrounding an osseointegrated implant in function. Peri-implantitis is an infectious disease that can be caused by various factors:
- Improper oral hygiene
- Smoking
- Systemic diseases
- Periodontitis ( inflammation of gums)
- Damage to nerves and tissues
- Perforation into maxillary sinus
- Bone fracture
- Rejection of the implant
- Implant bending or breaking
- Allergic reactions
Implants given to the patient are of different brands according to the bone condition present i.e. Noble Bio Care and Bredent
BONE GRAFT
Bone graft is a surgical technique done before the placement of implant if the bone isn’t thick enough to support the implant. Bone graft may fill the area where bone is absent or helps to provide structural stability.
BONE GRAFTING TECHNIQUE
- An incision is made in the gums, and then the jawbone is exposed.
- Bone graft i.e. bio-oss is then placed which will be closed and sutured.
- ‘Bio-oss’ is the leading bone substitute for regenerative dentistry. These particles are incorporated over time within living bone, which maintains the desired shape and also preserves volume.
- After the placement of bio-oss, a membrane is placed above that and the socket is closed by suturing it properly.
- This procedure may take around 4-6 months to heal.
SINUS LIFT
- Sinus lift procedure is a surgical procedure which aims to increase the amount of bone in upper back jaw jone, especially in the area of molars and premolars, by lifting the sinus membrane and placing a bone graft.
- This procedure is performed when the floor of sinus ( cavity within a bones of face connecting with nasal cavities) is too close to an area where dental implants are to be placed.
- Sinus lift is required especially in case of multiple tooth loss in upper back teeth region and loss of significant amount of bone in upper back teeth region.
SINUS LIFT PROCEDURE
- An incision is made in the gums, exposing the lateral bony wall of sinus.
- A small window is created to the sinus which exposes the sinus membrane.
- Then the membrane is separated from the bone and the bone graft “bio-oss” is placed into newly created space. It is then closed and sutured.
- This procedure may take upto 4-6 months to heal.
For the crown to be placed over the implants, it takes around 4-6 months after any of the above surgical procedure has been done.
