Clear Aligners / Invisible Braces

Why It Is Getting Popular

DentaLife Oral Concern at Kantipath, Jamal offers several options for Teeth Braces in Nepal – one of the latest technology is Clear Aligners (iAlign) which are gaining more popular in Nepal. Clear aligners are a transparent plastic form of dental braces. It is used to adjust teeth without brackets or wires. It is similar to Invisalign used in United States and other foreign countries but the cost in Nepal is much more affordable.

We will make a sequence of custom-made aligners for your teeth and every 2-3 weeks, you will remove it and replace it with the aligner in the sequence. Each aligner is worn for optimum 22 hours a day for about 2 weeks. On average, the treatment process takes 14 months and varies based on the complexity of the planned teeth movements. These invisible braces are removed during eating, brushing and flossing.

Clear Aligners

I don’t usually write reviews, but here I am because the whole Dental Life team is truly exceptional. I opted for the treatment with clear aligners under the supervision of Dr. Ujjwal Pyakurel and Dr. Sama Pradhan. They took the time to explain the entire process and answered all my questions.

The aligners were a perfect fit and they can even plan the whole batch of aligners if you are living abroad or planning to go abroad. The fee includes everything, even multiple batches of aligners if one is not satisfied with the results. The entire team were very down-to-earth people, including the nurses and the receptionists. I couldn’t be happier with the experience and results. Would definitely recommend this place for any dental issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dental Braces & Clear Aligners in Nepal — Your Questions Answered

Everything you need to know about metal braces, self-ligating braces, and clear aligners (iAlign) at DentaLife Oral Concern, Kathmandu — with our orthodontist specialist.

Understanding orthodontic treatment
  • Orthodontic treatment is a branch of dentistry that corrects teeth and jaws that are improperly positioned — using braces, aligners, or other appliances to gradually move teeth into their ideal positions.

You may benefit from orthodontic treatment if you have:

    • Crowded teeth — teeth overlapping because there is not enough space in the jaw
    • Gaps between teeth — spaces caused by missing teeth or teeth that are too small for the jaw
    • Crooked or irregular teeth — teeth that are rotated, tilted, or out of alignment
    • Improper bite — overbite (upper teeth too far forward), underbite (lower teeth in front of upper), crossbite (upper and lower teeth not aligning correctly), or open bite (front teeth not meeting)
    • Midline shift — the centre of the upper and lower teeth not aligning with the centre of the face

Orthodontic treatment is effective at any age, but is most efficient when started during adolescence when the jaw is still growing. Adults can also be treated successfully — there is no upper age limit.

  • Leaving misaligned teeth or a bad bite untreated does not just affect appearance — it leads to progressive dental and health problems over time:

    • Worsening bite problems: Jaw misalignment can become more severe, making it harder to chew, speak clearly, or open and close the mouth comfortably
    • Teeth shifting: Poorly aligned teeth tend to drift further out of position over time, making future treatment longer and more complex
    • Increased decay and gum disease: Food and plaque get trapped in crowded or crooked teeth that are harder to clean — increasing the risk of cavities, gum disease, and tooth loss
    • Abnormal tooth wear: A bad bite causes uneven forces on teeth, leading to excessive wear, chipping, or fracture of specific teeth
    • TMJ (jaw joint) problems: Bite problems put abnormal stress on the jaw joint, contributing to jaw pain, headaches, and clicking
    • Low self-confidence: Irregular or protruding teeth significantly affect self-esteem, smile confidence, and social interactions
The longer orthodontic problems are left untreated, the more complex and costly the eventual treatment becomes. Early intervention — especially in teenagers — produces the best and fastest outcomes.
  • There is no single "right" age — orthodontic treatment can be started at different stages depending on the type of problem:

    • Age 7–10 (early intervention): Some jaw growth problems are best addressed while the jaw is still developing. An orthodontist can identify these early and intervene to prevent more complex treatment later.
    • Age 11–16 (ideal for most cases): This is the most common and typically most efficient age to start braces. Most permanent teeth have erupted, the jaw is still growing, and teeth move more quickly.
    • Adults (any age): Adult orthodontic treatment is completely effective — teeth can be moved at any age. It may take slightly longer and some bite problems involving jaw bones may need surgical correction. Clear aligners are especially popular with adults due to their discreet appearance.
A consultation with our orthodontist will determine the ideal timing for your specific case. Walk-ins are welcome at DentaLife, Kantipath, Jamal, Kathmandu.

  • At DentaLife, the orthodontic treatment fee is all-inclusive and covers:

    • Initial orthodontist consultation and treatment planning
    • All orthodontic appointments throughout the treatment period
    • All adjustments, wire changes, and bracket replacements needed during treatment
    • For clear aligners: all sets of aligners including any additional batches if the result is not satisfactory
    • Retainers after treatment completion (please confirm at consultation)

There are no surprise charges during the treatment. If any additional dental work is needed before starting braces — such as extractions, scaling, or fillings — these are assessed and priced separately at your initial appointment.

Metal braces & self-ligating braces
  • Metal braces work by applying continuous, controlled pressure to teeth over time — gradually moving them into the desired position. They consist of:

    • Brackets: Small metal squares bonded directly onto the front surface of each tooth using dental adhesive
    • Archwire: A thin metal wire threaded through all the brackets — this wire exerts the force that moves the teeth
    • Elastic bands (ligatures): Small rubber bands that hold the wire into each bracket
    • Additional elastics: Sometimes attached between upper and lower teeth to correct bite problems

The orthodontist adjusts the wire at regular appointments — typically every 4–6 weeks — progressively moving the teeth closer to their target positions. The total treatment time is usually 12–24 months depending on the complexity of the case.

  • Self-ligating braces work on the same principle as metal braces but use a built-in sliding mechanism (a small clip or door on the bracket) to hold the wire — eliminating the need for elastic ligature bands.

Key differences and advantages of self-ligating braces:

    • Less friction: The sliding mechanism produces less friction between the wire and bracket, allowing teeth to move more freely and comfortably
    • Fewer appointments: Adjustments are quicker and may be needed less frequently
    • Easier to clean: No elastic bands means fewer areas for plaque to accumulate
    • Potentially faster treatment: Reduced friction can sometimes shorten overall treatment time
    • Less discomfort: Lower friction means less soreness after adjustment appointments

Self-ligating braces cost more than standard metal braces (NPR 120,000–140,000 vs NPR 75,000) but offer a more comfortable and convenient experience throughout treatment.

  • With metal or self-ligating braces, certain foods can break brackets, bend wires, or get trapped — causing delays in treatment and extra repair costs. Avoid:

    • Hard foods: Raw carrots, apples (bite into), nuts, hard sweets, ice, hard biscuits, popcorn kernels, bones
    • Sticky foods: Chewing gum, caramel, toffee, sticky sweets, paan, gutkha
    • Chewy foods: Bagels, tough meat, dried fruit
    • Foods that require biting into: Corn on the cob, whole apples — cut these into small pieces instead

You can eat most other foods normally — just cut harder items into small pieces and chew carefully with your back teeth. Soft foods (rice, dal, pasta, eggs, soft vegetables, yoghurt) are ideal throughout treatment.

A broken bracket or bent wire should be reported to us promptly — leaving it unrepaired can slow your treatment or cause discomfort. Call or WhatsApp us to book a repair appointment.
  • Oral hygiene is critically important during brace treatment — brackets and wires create extra surfaces for plaque to collect, significantly increasing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease if not cleaned thoroughly.

    The correct routine with braces:

    • Orthodontic toothbrush: Use a specially designed orthodontic brush (V-shaped bristle configuration) to clean around brackets effectively — in addition to your regular toothbrush
    • Interdental brush: Use a small interdental (interproximal) brush to clean under the wire and between brackets where a regular brush cannot reach
    • Fluoride toothpaste: Brush after every meal — not just twice a day. Food gets trapped in braces easily and must be removed promptly
    • Flossing: Use a floss threader or orthodontic floss to thread floss under the wire and between teeth
    • Mouthwash: An antibacterial or fluoride mouthwash helps reach areas that brushing misses
DentaLife stocks orthodontic brushes and interdental brushes in our dental shop. Ask our team for recommendations at your next appointment.
Clear aligners (invisible braces)
  • Clear aligners are a modern alternative to traditional braces — a series of custom-made, transparent plastic trays that gradually move your teeth into alignment without brackets or wires.

How the process works at DentaLife:

    • An impression (scan) of your teeth is taken and sent to the lab for digital treatment planning
    • Your entire treatment is digitally mapped out — you can visualise the predicted result before treatment begins
    • A full sequence of custom-made clear aligner trays is fabricated for your teeth
    • You wear each aligner for approximately 2 weeks before switching to the next in the sequence
    • Each aligner is designed to move your teeth slightly from the previous position
    • Aligners must be worn for a minimum of 22 hours per day for optimal results — they are removed only for eating, drinking (anything except water), brushing, and flossing
    • Average total treatment time is approximately 14 months, varying by case complexity

DentaLife offers iAlign — a clear aligner system similar to Invisalign used internationally, but at a significantly more affordable cost in Nepal.

  • Clear aligners offer several significant advantages over traditional metal braces:

    • Nearly invisible: Transparent trays are practically undetectable when worn — most people will not notice you are in orthodontic treatment
    • Removable: You can remove aligners for eating, drinking, brushing, flossing, and special occasions — no lifestyle restrictions
    • No food restrictions: Since aligners are removed before eating, you can eat whatever you like throughout treatment
    • Easier oral hygiene: Remove the aligner to brush and floss normally — no navigating around brackets and wires
    • More comfortable: Smooth plastic edges do not irritate cheeks and gums the way metal brackets can
    • Predictable results: Digital planning shows the expected outcome before treatment begins
    • Fewer mandatory appointments: All aligners are delivered upfront — ideal for patients who travel frequently or live abroad
    • Multiple batches included: At DentaLife, the fee includes additional aligner batches if the result is not fully satisfactory
  • For most cases of mild to moderate misalignment, crowding, spacing, and many bite corrections, clear aligners are equally effective as metal braces — with the added convenience of being removable and invisible.

However, metal or self-ligating braces remain the preferred option for:

    • Severe crowding or complex tooth movements requiring precise 3D control
    • Significant bite problems involving vertical or rotational tooth movements
    • Cases requiring extractions combined with major tooth movement
    • Patients who may struggle with the discipline of wearing aligners for 22 hours per day

The most important factor for aligner success is compliance — aligners must be worn for at least 22 hours per day. Patients who remove them too often or forget to wear them will see slower or incomplete results.

Our orthodontist will assess your specific case and recommend which treatment type will deliver the best outcome for you — there is no one-size-fits-all answer.
  • Yes — clear aligners at DentaLife are specifically well-suited for patients who are abroad or planning to go abroad. Here is why:

    • The entire sequence of aligners is planned and fabricated upfront after the initial impression — so you receive all your trays at the beginning of treatment
    • You simply swap to the next aligner every 2 weeks on your own schedule, with no mandatory in-clinic appointments required between sets
    • If you need a check-up or have concerns, you can visit us during trips home to Nepal
    • If treatment requires additional aligner batches — these are included in the cost and can be picked up or sent to you
Many of our clear aligner patients are students or professionals in countries like Australia, the UK, Japan, or the Middle East who complete their alignment treatment across visits home. Contact us to discuss your specific situation.
  • Keeping your aligners clean is essential for hygiene and to keep them clear:

    • Rinse aligners with cold water every time you remove them
    • Clean aligners with a soft toothbrush and clear (non-coloured) liquid soap or specialised aligner cleaning tablets — do not use toothpaste as it can scratch the surface
    • Never soak aligners in hot water — heat warps the plastic and ruins the fit
    • Store aligners in their case when not in your mouth — never wrap in tissue (they get thrown away easily)
    • Do not drink hot drinks, tea, coffee, or coloured beverages with aligners in — these stain the trays and distort the plastic
    • Only plain cold water can be drunk with aligners in
    • Brush and floss your teeth before reinserting aligners after eating

Treatment process & aftercare
  • Neither braces nor clear aligners cause sharp pain, but some mild soreness or pressure is normal — especially in the first few days after getting braces fitted or after each adjustment appointment, and when switching to a new aligner tray.

    What to expect:

    • The first week after getting braces is usually the most uncomfortable — teeth are sore to bite on and the lips and cheeks need time to adapt to the brackets
    • Soreness typically resolves within 3–5 days after each adjustment
    • Orthodontic wax can be applied over any bracket that is irritating the inside of the lip or cheek
    • Clear aligners cause a feeling of pressure when a new tray is first inserted — this eases within 1–2 days and indicates the aligner is working correctly
    • Over-the-counter pain relief (paracetamol or ibuprofen) is all that is needed in the rare cases where soreness is significant
  • Yes — wearing a retainer after braces or aligners is essential and non-negotiable. After orthodontic treatment, the bone and ligaments around the moved teeth need time to stabilise in their new positions. Without a retainer, teeth will naturally drift back toward their original positions — a process called relapse.

    How retainers work:

    • Fixed retainer: A thin wire bonded to the back surfaces of the front teeth — invisible and maintenance-free once in place
    • Removable retainer: A clear tray (similar to an aligner) or a Hawley retainer — worn full-time initially, then only at night indefinitely

Most orthodontists recommend wearing removable retainers at night for life — since teeth have a tendency to drift throughout adulthood regardless of orthodontic treatment.

Skipping your retainer is the single most common reason for orthodontic relapse. All the investment of time and money in braces can be undone within months without proper retention.
  • Not always — tooth extraction before braces depends entirely on the severity of crowding and the size of the jaw relative to the teeth.

    • No extraction needed: Mild to moderate crowding can often be resolved by expanding the arch, using interproximal reduction (slight slimming of tooth surfaces), or by using the existing space efficiently
    • Extraction required: Severe crowding or significant protrusion — where there is genuinely not enough jaw space to align all teeth — may require removing one or two premolars to create the space needed for proper alignment

Your orthodontist will assess your jaw size, tooth sizes, and bite relationship at the initial consultation and advise clearly whether extractions are recommended for your case — including which teeth and why.

Booking & getting started
  • At your first orthodontic appointment at DentaLife, you can expect:

    • Clinical examination: Our orthodontist examines your teeth, bite, and jaw alignment
    • X-rays: A full-mouth digital OPG (panoramic X-ray) is taken to assess tooth roots, bone levels, and any unerupted teeth — this is done at an external imaging centre and is a necessary step before treatment
    • Treatment options discussion: The orthodontist explains which treatment types are suitable for your case, the expected duration, and the process involved
    • Cost breakdown: You will be given a clear total cost before any commitment is made — no surprises
    • Questions answered: You can ask anything about the process, lifestyle impact, and what to expect

If you wish to proceed, treatment can often be started at a subsequent appointment after the assessment is complete.
