If patient does regular dental check-up and teeth scaling they can avoid gum diseases and tooth decay.  So PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE.

No. of Visits

Dental Scaling can take single to several visits – depending upon the presence of plaque, calculus and stains in the teeth.

Relation between Scaling and Gum Diseases

If you have a Gum disease and you have a good to fair prognosis than the teeth can be saved for a period of time, root planing and scaling is the initial phase of treatment. The status of gums and periodontal ligament tissues is directly related to the oral hygiene status of the patient.

Due to the presence of calculus, there is poor status of gums resulting in the periodontal diseases. Once, the scaling is performed, the gum diseases can be arrested to some extent, reversed and restore dental health .Maintenance of oral hygiene along with good oral habits also helps to prevent the gum diseases.

Teeth Scaling and Oral Habits

Teeth Scaling cannot be effective if the patient has a habit of Cigarette Smoking, Consumption of smokeless tobacco like Betel nuts, Areca nuts, Paan, Gutkha. Therefore, all these habits should be stopped in order to maintain good oral hygiene and scaling be effective.

Teeth Scaling and Sensitivity

Dental scaling can sometimes be uncomfortable particularly if you have exposed root surfaces due to receding gums. If so, local anesthesia can be offered in order to numb that area and make the procedure more comfortable.

Things to  remember after Teeth Scaling

  • Should NOT eat or drink hot, cold or sour food for at least  1 hour after scaling. Cold Drinks, coffee, tea (caffeinated drinks) should be avoided for at least 24 hrs .
  • Sensitivity after teeth scaling usually occur which is normal. So, Gargle with warm saline water after meal for at least 1 week.
  • Sometimes, the tooth can be mobile after scaling in the patient having extreme calculus which is again normal. This is due to the calculus that has damaged bone underneath the gums. Scaling can always reverse back the receded gingiva to some extent .
Frequently Asked Questions

Teeth Scaling / Cleaning — Your Questions Answered

Everything you need to know about professional teeth scaling and cleaning at DentaLife, Kathmandu.

  • Teeth scaling (also called teeth cleaning or dental prophylaxis) is a professional procedure that removes dental plaque, hardened calculus (tartar), and stains from the surface of your teeth and along the gum line — areas that regular brushing and flossing cannot clean effectively.

You need it because plaque hardens into calculus within 24–72 hours if not removed. Once calculus forms, it can only be removed by a dentist. Left untreated, it leads to gum disease, bone loss, bad breath, and eventually tooth loss — all of which are far more costly and painful to treat than a routine scaling.

Prevention is better than cure. Regular scaling every 6 months can save you from root canals, fillings, and gum surgeries in the future.
  • At DentaLife Oral Concern, Kathmandu, teeth scaling and polishing costs between NPR 2,500 and NPR 4,500 per session. The total cost depends on:

    • The amount of plaque and calculus buildup on your teeth
    • The presence of stains (tobacco, tea, coffee)
    • The time taken by the dentist to complete the procedure

For the most current prices, visit our Prices & Services page or message us on WhatsApp.

  • Ultrasonic scaling uses a high-frequency vibrating tip (sonic scaler) that safely breaks up and removes hard calculus deposits and stains — without the scraping discomfort of traditional manual instruments. At DentaLife, we use ultrasonic techniques as our primary method, performed directly by our dentists (not dental assistants).

Ultrasonic scaling is faster, more comfortable, and more effective at removing deep calculus compared to purely manual methods.
  • For most patients, teeth scaling is mildly uncomfortable but not painful. You may feel vibration and water spray from the ultrasonic scaler, and some sensitivity around the gum line — especially if you already have inflamed gums or receding gums with exposed root surfaces.

If you have significant sensitivity or exposed root surfaces, local anaesthesia can be offered to numb the area and make the procedure completely comfortable. Just let our dentist know before starting.

    • The procedure takes approximately 30–60 minutes for a standard session
    • Multiple visits may be needed for heavy calculus buildup
    • No downtime — you can return to normal activities immediately
  • Yes — mild sensitivity after teeth scaling is completely normal and expected. Here is why it happens and what to do:

    • Calculus builds up around the gum line and acts as a physical barrier. When it is removed, the underlying tooth surface and gum tissue is temporarily more sensitive to temperature changes.
    • Gums that were inflamed may feel tender for a day or two as they heal.
    • In patients with extreme calculus buildup, a tooth may feel slightly loose after scaling. This is because the calculus was structurally filling the space — it is temporary and normal.
After-care tips: Avoid hot, cold, or sour food and drinks for at least 1 hour post-scaling. Avoid caffeinated drinks (tea, coffee, cold drinks) for 24 hours. Gargle with warm salt water after meals for at least 1 week to help gums heal.
  • The standard recommendation is every 6 months for most healthy adults. However, the frequency depends on your individual oral health:

    • Every 6 months — for patients with good oral hygiene and no gum disease
    • Every 3–4 months — for patients with active gum disease (periodontitis) or a history of heavy calculus buildup
    • Every 3 months — for smokers, tobacco users, or patients with diabetes (higher risk of gum disease)

Your DentaLife dentist will advise the best interval for your specific situation after your first visit.

  • Skipping regular scaling allows plaque and calculus to accumulate, which leads to a progressive chain of problems:

    • Gingivitis — early gum inflammation (red, swollen, bleeding gums)
    • Periodontitis — deeper infection affecting the bone and ligament that hold teeth in place
    • Bone loss — once the supporting bone is lost, it cannot regenerate
    • Tooth mobility and tooth loss — the eventual outcome of untreated advanced gum disease

Many patients at DentaLife visit us only when they are in severe pain — at which point they require root canal treatment, fillings, or extractions that cost significantly more than a routine scaling. Regular scaling every 6 months is by far the most cost-effective dental investment you can make.

  • Yes — scaling is the first and most important treatment for gum disease. In patients with a good to fair prognosis, root planing and scaling is the initial phase of gum disease treatment.

    Here is how it helps:

    • Removing calculus eliminates the main source of bacterial infection around the gums
    • Gum inflammation is reduced significantly once the bacterial load is removed
    • Early-stage gum disease (gingivitis) can be fully reversed with scaling and improved oral hygiene
    • More advanced gum disease (periodontitis) can be arrested and stabilised, preventing further bone loss

The long-term health of your gums and the periodontal ligament tissues is directly linked to your oral hygiene status — and scaling is the cornerstone of that maintenance.

  • Scaling can be performed on tobacco users, but its effectiveness is significantly reduced if tobacco habits continue. Cigarette smoking, and smokeless tobacco products such as betel nuts, areca nuts, paan, and gutkha all:

    • Dramatically increase calculus and stain buildup, requiring more frequent scaling
    • Suppress immune response in the gums, slowing healing after scaling
    • Increase the risk of periodontitis and oral cancer
    • Reduce blood flow to gum tissue, making treatment less effective
For scaling to be fully effective and for your gums to heal properly, these habits should be stopped. Our team can provide guidance on cessation as part of your dental care.
  • For most patients with routine plaque and mild calculus, teeth scaling and polishing is completed in a single visit of 30–60 minutes.

However, more visits may be needed if:

    • You have heavy or long-standing calculus buildup across multiple teeth
    • There is deep subgingival calculus (below the gum line) requiring root planing
    • You have active gum disease requiring phased treatment
    • Sensitivity during the procedure requires breaks or staged treatment

Your dentist will assess and advise after examining your teeth at the first appointment. Walk-ins are welcome at DentaLife — no prior appointment needed.

  • Teeth scaling and polishing removes surface stains caused by tea, coffee, tobacco, and food — which can make your teeth noticeably cleaner and brighter. Many patients see a significant improvement in colour after scaling simply because the stained calculus layer is removed.

However, scaling is not the same as teeth whitening. It restores your teeth to their natural, clean colour — it does not change the underlying shade of your enamel. If you want a noticeably whiter result beyond your natural colour, professional whitening or laser bleaching is recommended.

Interested in whiter teeth? See our Teeth Whitening page — laser whitening from NPR 22,000.
